New to the List, September 2026: Arusha, the Serengeti and the Mara

Four lodge pages joined the list in September 2026, and between them they trace a single trip: Tanzania first, then Kenya, the route of our own Dec-2025 safari. Legendary Lodge outside Arusha, &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas and &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge in the Serengeti, and &Beyond Bateleur Camp in the Masai Mara. The long version, coffee farm to wicker basket, is in Tanzania & Kenya: Even When You Know Africa, She Still Surprises You. The four pages are the shorter, more useful version, one lodge at a time.

Here is why each made the list, and one detail from each page worth knowing before you book.

Why does a coffee plantation belong on a safari list?

Because of what it does to the first night. Legendary Lodge is a colonial coffee plantation outside Arusha, and most safaris begin with an airstrip; ours began with coffee grown more or less where we were drinking it. Bird calls instead of alarms, a lazy view of the mountains, and somewhere in the first afternoon the realisation that schedules no longer matter and will not for some time. The lodge does not compete with the bush. It gets you ready for it, and the next morning, after a last unhurried breakfast on the veranda, the next runway is a strip of dirt in open savannah. How that first night fits the rest of the route is in The First Night: From an Arusha Coffee Farm to a Dirt Airstrip.

Why is &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas on the list?

Because it is the Serengeti with nothing between you and the plains but canvas, and someone still asks when you would like the hot water. The detail from the page is the shower: a bucket, filled by hand by your butler, on request, and we stood under it in the dark listening to hyenas somewhere in the distance. Inside the tent there are chandeliers, crisp sheets and polished silver, and in the morning the sunrise comes through the screen and the first game drive leaves. “Under canvas” sounds wonderfully rugged right up until the steam starts rising. The page is &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas; the nights there are in the family’s Tanzania and Kenya log.

Why is &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge on the list?

For the migration that forgot to leave. We arrived in December knowing the herds had moved on, because the calendars said so and the guides had warned us gently, and found hundreds of thousands of wildebeest who disagreed, massed across the plains so that the ground in the distance seemed to ripple. The detail from the page is the lodge itself: it sits on the river in the Grumeti reaches of the Serengeti ecosystem, with a plunge pool at the suite and a fire pit above the river at dusk, and after a day on the plains it lets the day settle. The page is &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge; the wildebeest, in numbers that made counting laughable, are in the same log.

Why is &Beyond Bateleur Camp on the list?

Because it is the Kenya leg, and the old-school one: fireside evenings, a sense that time has politely slowed down, and the filming location of Out of Africa just over the next hill. The detail from the page is the mood, which it describes as unapologetically romantic, and the two things the family did from camp: a hot-air balloon over the Mara at first light, and a lion hunt tracked at night by spotlight. Africa, as the page says, is even more impressive when she knows you are not in a rush. The page is &Beyond Bateleur Camp; the balloon and the night drive are in the log.

Which of the four should you book?

All four, in that order, if the point is a first Serengeti and Mara with the family and you would rather arrive slowed down than still carrying the airport. If one of them is closer to the trip you have in mind, tell us which on the Plan a Safari page and we will say honestly where it fits.
