We arrived knowing the migration had moved on. Several hundred thousand wildebeest disagreed.

&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge sits on the banks of a tributary of the Grumeti River in the Western Corridor of Tanzania's Serengeti National Park: ten river-facing suites, each with a private deck and plunge pool, and a pod of hippos in the water below. We stayed in Dec-2025.

We arrived at &Beyond Grumeti knowing the odds. The Great Migration was supposed to have moved on. The calendars said so. The guides warned us gently not to expect miracles, in the tone of people who have delivered that news before.

Africa, apparently, had not checked the schedule. Instead we found ourselves in the midst of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, massed across the plains in numbers so large they distort your sense of scale. The ground in the distance seemed to ripple. The air buzzed. It felt less like watching wildlife and more like watching a force of nature pause, briefly, for effect.

Migration

The migration that had supposedly left

The calendars we had read said the herds move on from Grumeti well before December. Our guides warned us, gently, not to expect miracles. We drove out anyway and found hundreds of thousands of wildebeest spread so far across the plain that the ground in the distance seemed to ripple.

The useful lesson for anyone planning a trip is that the months in the brochure are a forecast, not a booking. The herds do not consult itineraries. The other lesson is that the Western Corridor is quieter than the central Serengeti whichever month you pick, which matters more than most people expect once they are sitting at a sighting with nobody else in it.

It was one of those safari moments you don't announce loudly. You just sit with it.

This is one of the things safari teaches you rather quickly: wildlife does not consult itineraries. The calendar is a guide, the guide is a guide, and the wildebeest are wildebeest. All you can do is be in the right place, and then have the sense to switch off the engine and absorb the luck of being there at precisely the right time.

The lodge itself sits on the river in the Grumeti reaches of the Serengeti ecosystem, and after a day on the plains it does the thing the best lodges do: it lets the day settle. We came back to it each evening a little quieter than we had left.

Stay

What is Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge like to stay in?

&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge was rebuilt and reopened in 2022 on the same stretch of river. Ten suites face the water, each with canvas walls, hardwood floors, a deck and a private plunge pool; one is a family suite with a second, smaller bedroom for children. The guest area is an open arc of deck over the river with a bar, a firepit and dining. Hippos live in the river below the lodge and are audible at night; andBeyond calls it a serenade, which is one word for it.

What that means in practice is coming back from an afternoon drive to a plunge pool a few steps from the bed, a river view from the room, and a soundtrack after dark that nobody on staff can switch off. Meals, drinks and game drives are part of the stay, so the days fill themselves without anyone having to try very hard. Yoga at dawn is on offer too, and a Wild Impact community visit is available at an additional cost.

Is Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge good for families?

Yes. There is one family suite, so book it early, and the WILDchild programme runs here. Children get their own smaller bedroom in the family suite rather than a fold-out in the corner. We combined Grumeti with &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas with the whole family in Dec-2025, and the pairing of a river lodge with a mobile camp worked well; ask us about it.

When is the best time to visit Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge?

The Western Corridor sees the migration pass through around the middle of the year on the way north; for the rest of the year the resident game, the river and the hippos stay put. We went in December and found the herds still there, so the honest answer is that it depends on what you want to see. Tell us that, and we will tell you which month fits.
