&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge

We arrived knowing the migration had moved on. Several hundred thousand wildebeest disagreed.

We arrived at &Beyond Grumeti knowing the odds. The Great Migration was supposed to have moved on. The calendars said so. The guides warned us gently not to expect miracles, in the tone of people who have delivered that news before.

Africa, apparently, had not checked the schedule. Instead we found ourselves in the midst of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, massed across the plains in numbers so large they distort your sense of scale. The ground in the distance seemed to ripple. The air buzzed. It felt less like watching wildlife and more like watching a force of nature pause, briefly, for effect.

It was one of those safari moments you don't announce loudly. You just sit with it.

This is one of the things safari teaches you rather quickly: wildlife does not consult itineraries. The calendar is a guide, the guide is a guide, and the wildebeest are wildebeest. All you can do is be in the right place, and then have the sense to switch off the engine and absorb the luck of being there at precisely the right time.

The lodge itself sits on the river in the Grumeti reaches of the Serengeti ecosystem, and after a day on the plains it does the thing the best lodges do: it lets the day settle. We came back to it each evening a little quieter than we had left.
