The name Karoo comes from the Khoisan word Garo which means dessert, but the Central Karoo is not exactly that, it is somewhere in between the Cape’s fynbos and a dessert with a very low growing eco system that needs very little water to survive making the rainfall a big part of why a place can be called a karoo, the extreme heat and cold also plays roles in the name.
