Earth Lodge is the rare safari lodge where the building itself is a reason to visit. Sabi Sabi describes it as a masterpiece of organic design, architecture and dramatic minimalism, and the phrase holds up: the lodge does not sit on the landscape so much as disappear into it, an award-winning piece of design that looks as though it grew there rather than arrived.

The effect on a guest is curious. You arrive expecting to look at animals and find yourself equally absorbed by the walls, the light and the line where the built and the natural stop being distinguishable. The lodge calls itself a living gallery of the senses, which is grander language than we would normally allow, except that it is difficult to argue with once you are inside.
