Some lodges are built. Mthembu Lodge was assembled, stone by stone, by members of the Mthembu clan, and that is not a marketing flourish but the literal history of the place. Stay here and you connect with five hundred years of history, which is a considerable amount of history to be sleeping in.

The lodge is configured on the circle, a shape chosen to represent wholeness and perfection, and it sits on the embankment of the White iMfolozi River. The private suites are the work of the same hands, which lends the whole property a coherence that no architect's brief could manufacture. Every wall was placed by someone with a stake in it.
