Dinner laid out at dusk beside a lit tent under a flat-topped acacia, a campfire burning and rows of canvas chairs facing the open plain

&Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas

Canvas walls, chandeliers, polished silver, and a hot shower filled by hand under the southern stars.

&Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas is the sort of place that resets your understanding of the word luxury. Canvas walls. Chandeliers. Crisp sheets. Polished silver. And a hot shower bucket, filled by your butler by hand, on request, with the steam rising into the Serengeti night.

"Under canvas" sounds wonderfully rugged until someone asks when you would like the hot water. We had flown in by light aircraft, landing on a dirt strip carved into open savannah with the bush stretching away in every direction, and the distance between that arrival and the silver on the dinner table never quite stopped being funny.

The sounds carry differently at night. Closer, more personal, impossible to ignore.

It is indulgent, and we will not pretend otherwise. But standing under that shower in the dark, looking up at the starry southern sky and listening to hyenas vocalise somewhere in the distance, it felt like the only correct way to experience the Serengeti. There is nothing between you and the plains but canvas, and the night makes sure you know it.

Then you tuck in under a duvet while the animals stage their arguments just beyond the tent. Sleep comes, eventually. Then the sunrise pops through the screen and it is time for the first game drive.
