Mkuze Falls Private Game Lodge
Historic Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal: one of only two private reserves in the region with the full Big 5, and nearly 430 resident bird species besides.
Zululand has a way of making history feel close at hand, and Mkuze Falls Private Game Reserve sits squarely in the historic heart of it, in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. It is one of only two private game reserves in the region where all of the Big 5 are present: lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant. In a part of the country with no shortage of good bush, that is a distinction worth noticing.
The other number is the one the birders will fix on. Nearly 430 species are resident here, which means that on the mornings when the lions are being unhelpful (lions are frequently unhelpful), there is still a great deal going on. It is the sort of place where people who arrived for elephant leave with a suspicious new interest in birds.

The Big 5 will always be the headline, and rightly so. But the pleasure of a reserve like Mkuze Falls is the layering: the large animals you came for, and the several hundred smaller ones that turn a quiet drive into a busy one.
