In the heart of Timbavati and Umbabat, South Africa, Motswari Private Game Reserve is a place where dreams of the African wilderness come to life. The name “Motswari,” meaning “to conserve and protect” in Tswana, perfectly encapsulates the ethos of this reserve. Guests are welcomed with warm hospitality, landscapes, and wildlife viewing including the chance to see the renowned Big Five.
Motswari is celebrated for its seclusion, experiences, and hospitality, adhering to the legacy of its visionary founder, the late Paul Geiger. Geiger, a passionate conservationist, left a profound impact on the region and its wildlife. His daughter, Marion Geiger, and her husband, Fabrice Orengo de Lamazière, continue to honor this legacy, ensuring that Motswari remains true to its roots while evolving with the times.
The journey of Motswari began in the mid-1970s, and initially focused on wildlife breeding programs for species like nyala, cheetah, and wild dog. At that time, the area was also a hunting ground, and the wildlife was understandably wary. Recognizing this, Paul Geiger purchased the Java farm in Timbavati in 1980, fostering a relationship with neighboring Motswari. This marked the beginning of a lifelong love affair with the region for the Geiger family. By 1981, Paul had acquired a share in Motswari, eventually becoming the sole owner.
As the chairman of Timbavati, Paul Geiger played a crucial role in shaping the reserve’s policies, always prioritizing the well-being of both the land and its people. Today, Motswari is a vast and biodiverse sanctuary, home to endangered species such as rhinos and the rare wild dog. The lodge even served as a rehabilitation center for these magnificent canines, whose population is now stable and thriving after decades of protection.
Marion and Fabrice, the second generation of dedicated custodians, are committed to preserving the essence of Motswari while keeping it relevant and vibrant. Marion’s late brother, Roland, was also deeply involved in the family business. Though Roland tragically passed away in a plane accident, his spirit lives on in the reserve.
Marion and Fabrice’s love story is intertwined with Motswari, adding a romantic touch to the reserve’s rich history. Fabrice fondly recalls how he arrived as a guest and left as Marion’s husband. Together they have partnered with Newmark Hotels and Reserves to manage Motswari, ensuring it remains a family-run and family-owned establishment.
Geiger’s Camp, once Roland’s personal home, has been developed into a luxurious, private retreat that honors his memory. With 180-degree views and a blend of Bohemian chic and vintage safari elements, the camp exudes a unique charm, reflecting the Geiger family’s deep connection to Africa.
Despite facing challenges, including a devastating rhino-poaching incident, Marion and Fabrice have remained resilient. They founded Rhino Disharmony in 2014 to combat the demand for rhino horns through educational events and support for local rhino protection efforts.
As the world recovers from the pandemic, Motswari is once again bustling with guests. Marion and Fabrice attribute this success to their dedicated team, many of whom are third-generation employees with deep ties to the reserve.
A stay at Motswari is the ultimate escape from urban life, offering guests the chance to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying luxurious accommodations and exceptional service. The Main Camp features 15 en-suite bungalows, each designed with traditional South African decor and modern comforts, providing a serene retreat close to the bushveld.
For a truly unique experience, guests can spend a night at the Giraffe’s Nest Hide, an open-air treehouse overlooking the Xanatsi Dam. This luxury hideaway combines starlit skies with stylish comfort, offering complete privacy and an unforgettable connection to the wilderness.
Dining at Motswari is a celebration of South African cuisine and culture, with meals served in the open-air boma, surrounded by trees and illuminated by lanterns and an open fire pit. Guests can also enjoy pre-dinner drinks, nightcaps, or coffee at the bar, and relax in the lounge area before setting off on early-morning game drives.
Whether exploring the Timbavati and Umbabat Nature Reserves and Greater Kruger National Park or simply enjoying Motswari’s exceptional amenities and activities, guests are sure to create spectacular memories. Motswari Private Game Reserve is a place of integrity, hospitality, and conservation, promising a nurturing and unforgettable experience for all who visit.
