Botswana, a land of untamed wilderness and captivating wildlife, is a destination that every avid traveler dreams of exploring. I was fortunate enough to embark on a thrilling adventure to this remarkable country, with one of the most unforgettable stops being Leroo La Tau, a hidden gem nestled on the western bank of the Boteti River.
Leroo La Tau provided me with a unique perspective of Botswana’s natural wonders. I vividly recall waking up to the vibrations in my chest, an unusual yet exhilarating sensation. It was the sound of lions chasing elephants through the camp, a symphony of nature’s power echoing in the early morning hours.

The thrill didn’t stop there. As I ventured out on game drives, I discovered that lions had a penchant for relaxing on the raised timber decks of our tents. These magnificent creatures, unperturbed by our presence, became unexpected neighbors during our stay. It was a humbling experience to share space with them, separated only by the canvas of our tent walls.
One heart-pounding moment etched in my memory was when I realized that lions had silently rested just meters from my vehicle while I retrieved my binoculars. It was a reminder of the wild beauty and unpredictability that Botswana offers at every turn.

Leroo La Tau is a sanctuary of luxury perched on the edge of the Boteti River Valley. The lodge boasts twelve lavish thatched and glass-fronted suites, each elevated on a wooden platform, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. From these vantage points, you can witness the annual zebra migration and the abundant wildlife that frequents the river.

The main lounge and dining area, adorned with wooden and thatch finishes, provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation. As you unwind at the bar, you’ll be serenaded by the enchanting night sounds of the African bush. For those seeking a refreshing dip, the swimming pool is an inviting oasis. Additionally, a game-viewing hide built into the riverbank offers panoramic views of the Boteti River.

The activities at Leroo La Tau are as diverse as the landscape itself. Guided game drives through the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park reveal exceptional wildlife sightings along the Boteti River. Depending on water levels, boat activities provide an alternative perspective of the region’s beauty. Cultural excursions to Khumaga Village and day trips to Nxai Pan and Baines Baobabs are also on offer.
For adventurous souls, a three-night stay presents the opportunity for a unique experience—a sleepout under the stars on the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. (the sleepout is seasonal. Check with the lodge for dates.)

The Boteti River holds a unique history, intertwined with the fate of Leroo La Tau. As the primary outflow of the Okavango Delta, it has experienced cycles of decline and resurgence. In the mid-1980s, a period of low rainfall caused the river to recede, leaving Leroo La Tau with a few precious waterholes that continued to be a lifeline for wildlife.
However, in 2009, after two decades of drought, record rainfall rejuvenated the river, bringing life back to its banks. Today, Leroo La Tau stands as a testament to the ever-changing rhythms of nature, perched on cliffs over 10 meters above the river, offering unparalleled views of the Boteti River and the Makgadikgadi Pans.
My journey to Leroo La Tau in Botswana was a remarkable encounter with the raw beauty of the African wilderness. The memories of lions, elephants, and the rhythmic flow of the Boteti River will forever hold a special place in my heart. It’s a destination where luxury harmonizes with nature, creating an experience that is both awe-inspiring and humbling.

Botswana, with its untamed landscapes and vibrant wildlife, is a treasure waiting to be explored, and Leroo La Tau is the perfect gateway to this extraordinary piece of paradise. If you’re seeking an adventure that will leave an indelible mark on your soul, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on a journey to this incredible destination.
